How to Install Ubuntu 20.04 LTS on Virtual Box

There are many ways to install Linux on your system. You can either delete everything from your system and then install Linux. Or you can also dual boot Linux with windows on your system. But If you don’t want to change anything about your current operating system then using a virtual machine like oracle’s virtual box is a good idea.

For example, if you are starting to learn how to use Linux for the first time, installing any Linux distribution as your primary operating system is not beneficial for you. Instead, you can install Linux on your current system whether it is Mac or Windows.

In this way, you can use Linux like any other application on your windows. When you want to use it for a limited time.

In this tutorial, we are going to show how you can install and set up a virtual Linux machine on your primary operating system.

For this tutorial we need

System specification

A stable internet connection to download the application and ISO file of ubuntu 20.04. Windows 10 system with at least 12GB of free space and at least 4GB of RAM. It can be installed with less ram but then your system will hang while using the virtual machine.

Oracle Virtual Box

We will need to download the virtual box application. It is a free and open-source cross-platform application. It enables you to host different operating systems in the virtual environment on the host machine.

Ubuntu LTS 20.04

We will also download the latest ISO file of Ubuntu. Ubuntu is a Linux operating system. It’s part of Linux distribution based on Debian. Ubuntu LTS 20.04 is the latest version of it.

In this tutorial, I’m going to install Ubuntu LTS 20.04 on Windows 10. If you prefer a video tutorial. You can watch this one here from our Youtube Channel

Step 1:  Download and Install Virtual Box

you can download the latest stable version of VirtualBox from here.

Since we are installing it for windows, So we will select the ‘Windows Hosts’ option and the download will start.

After the download is completed, You just have to click on the .exe file and follow the instructions keeping all the options to the default.

Step 2: Download the Ubuntu ISO File

Now we will download the latest ISO file of Ubuntu from its official site.

Step 3: Installing Ubuntu Linux inside Windows using VirtualBox

You have now installed the VirtualBox and downloaded the ISO file. It’s time to install and setup Linux in VirtualBox.

Click on the virtual box icon on the desktop and let it start. Now click on the ‘New’ and give your virtual operating system a suitable name. In my case, I’m going to name it Ubuntu 20.04 and then click Next.

Now we are going to allocate RAM for the virtual OS. MY system has 8GB RAM but I’m allocating it up to the green mark which is almost 5GB.

Now we will create a virtual hard disk. This will be used as a virtual hard disk for the Linux operating system where it will store its files.

Here we will select the VDI(Virtual Disk Image) Option.

Now we will select the “Dynamically allocated’ option. So that we can select the amount of storage we want to give to the virtual OS.

The recommended size is 10GB. However, I will prefer it to be 20 or 25Gb.

Step 3: Boot the ISO File to Install Ubuntu

Once everything is set, it is time to boot the ISO and install ubuntu as a virtual OS.

You have to browse and select the ISO file of Ubuntu 20.04 from its location. Click the folder icon as shown below and select the file and then click start.

After some time you will see the option to install ubuntu.

Click ‘Continue’

I have selected the updates and third party applications options so that it can download all the drivers needed and then click Continue.

Select ‘Erase disk and install Ubuntu’. Don’t worry. It won’t delete anything on your Windows operating system. We are using the virtual disk space of 20-25GB that I created in the previous steps. It won’t impact the real operating system.

Click ‘Continue’

Choose Your Time Zone and then click Continue.

Type the Username and Password.

The installation is almost done. It will take 10-15 mins to complete it.

Once the installation is finished, click the restart button.

We have successfully set up the Ubuntu 20.04 LTS Virtual Machine. From now on, just click on the installed Ubuntu virtual machine. You can use it directly.

That’s all you need to do to install Linux in VirtualBox on Windows. If you have any doubts, or if you encounter any issues, please feel free to ask your questions in the comment box below.
